Pulse / Motor / Sensory Assessment (P.M.S.)

  • Pulse
Assess for presence/absence of pulse signs
    • Upper extremities: radial pulse
    • Lower extremities: posterior tibial pulse
  • Motor
"Can you wiggle your fingers/toes for me?"
  • Sensory
Pinch the skin near the pulse point or squeeze a finger/toe and ask the patient to identify the part being squeezed.

Note: As a procedure, it may be convenient to use the following concept: wiggle (motor) - pulse - pinch (sensory)
